July Meeting – Howard of (Mates) Hawkes Bay Independent Brewery
We welcomed Ray, Stephen, and Stuart as visitors and hope they liked what they saw and will return.
The monthly Raffle, a fruit basket(with fruit) was won by Norm.
The judging of the monthly beer points cup competitions produced a bronze to Brian and also to David for their Pilsner entries. Congratulations.
Our guest speaker, Howard who brews the Mates range, from HB Independent Brewery in Meeanee gave us a little run down on his history in the beer trade and how he became a brewer. He gave us a detailed run through of making the beers starting with the mash and the wort. He emphasised the temperatures that they use during the process to get the quality they are after. All the brews are batch brewed and they make a minimum of 5000l batches up to a maximum of 6000l. He discussed the different malts used and the different sized cracked grain depending on what brew they are making. The grist goes into a tank with water at 50 degrees and then raised to 76 degreesto kill any activity. It is then pumped to a tank and boiled for one and a half hours and the wort os tranfered to the kettle. once fermintation is complete the beer is left on the lees for a time to remove off flavours and aromas. The beer is then filtered, carbonated and bottled at 15-20psi to retain carbonation. He gave us some differences in the processes he uses to make their different brews; Amber Ale, Pilsner, Porter, Summer Ale and Lager.
